Being the brave soul that I am, I went ahead and created a deconstructed method of student-driven close reading that I felt morally and ethically good about and could easily implement with my students.

It was unbelievable. I was spending a minimal amount of time prepping each week and the students were all engaged, all of the time. LITERALLY! Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science content were all being easily integrated into my language arts block, every single day was differentiated and most importantly the students fully owned their learning.

All of the sudden not only were my teammates interested in what I was doing, everyone was interested in what I was doing. Because it was . . .

Authentic instruction that created life-long learning habits for the students and it worked.
